St Mirren FC kicking off the new season with a new supporter chosen tunnel area design

The Paisley 2021 Stadium, home to St Mirren Football club has undergone refurbishment to transform the tunnel area. The stadium hadn’t been changed since it was built in 2009.
The £7,000 revamp was completed in the light of St Mirren’s promotion into the Scottish Premier League. The St Mirren Chairman, Gordon Scott approached Rearo, in order to help with the project .The plan was a collaborative effort involving laminate suppliers Formica Group, Gate Creative and Rearo.
Gordon Scott put out a statement to the Saints fans stating “We want supporters to send in their suggestions for the wall. Whether it be iconic moments, matches or players, we want you to let us know what you’d like to see on the tunnel wall.”
To construct the ideas and bring the tunnel to life, Rearo decided on using Younique® by Formica Group. The use of the Younique service for digitally rendered panels meant that any design could be translated onto the tunnel walls.
Fiona Kennedy, Marketing Coordinator at Rearo Laminates comments “we have worked with Formica Group for just over 20 years. We use Formica in our projects regularly because of the ease of its installation onto the boards and because of its great durability.”
Rearo contacted Gate Creative’s director and graphic designer Ken Doig to design the tunnels inside wall panels. After a meeting with the St Mirren Chairman and the directors about the fan suggestions, the design of the new tunnel area was decided.
The new design documents the story of the Saints from their origins in 1877, featuring historic victories and inspirational players; past and present, top goal scorers and their club crest, over a matte grey/black paisley pattern, creating a great visual impact aimed to inspire the players as they go out on to the field.
Graham Mercer, Managing Director at Rearo Laminates commented “Formica Laminate was the obvious choice to go for, we needed a hardwearing surface and something that was easy to clean. They produce some of the best definition surfaces in the world, the relationship was invaluable to get the project delivered.”
